ARTISTS: Erin Donovan, vibraphone, percussion; Jack Chen, flute; Jennifer King, piano

Usher in the arrival of spring with a captivating early April concert that highlights the inventive brilliance of contemporary composers through an evocative pairing of instruments. Featuring visionary vibraphonist and percussionist Erin Donovan, accomplished flautist Jack Chen, and award-winning pianist and host Jennifer King, this performance takes you on a rich and diverse sonic journey. The program includes the world premiere of emerging Canadian composer Ewan MacLean’s graphic notation piece "Forecast for Fictional Landscape," which sparks a spontaneous conversation between vibraphone, flute, and piano, as well as Danielle Eva Schwob’s "Traveling North," a musical daydream that evokes icicles and dewy forests. Erin Donovan shines solo with the world premiere of Canadian composer Rob Power’s "Mahone Bay," the central work of this program, for vibraphone, gongs, cymbals, crotale, and crystal bowl, alongside "Aqua" from emerging Brazilian-Canadian composer Uandha Fernandes Barbosa’s "Elementa Alchemica." Adding a touch of timeless simplicity, the concert features Chick Corea’s "Children’s Song 1" and "Children’s Song 6," two short, evocative pieces from the American composer’s beloved series, reflecting his vision of beauty through the spirit of a child. Co-presented with the Halifax Central Library as part of our Sensory-Accessible Concerts series, this concert is thoughtfully designed with sensory-friendly adaptations to create a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere. Erin Donovan, vibraphone, percussion

“I’m thrilled to be bringing you these works that explore both the elements and the beauty and mystery of landscapes that resonate deeply within us. I chose to feature the vibraphone in this concert, as the vibraphone has the potential to sustain long tones, is a chordal instrument with many sonic possibilities and is also dear to my heart. The vibraphone is an acoustic instrument that has metal bars and a sustain pedal, much like a piano. I hope you enjoy these works by younger composers and established composers, both local and from other landscapes.” - Erin Donovan

Percussionist, composer and interdisciplinary artist Erin Donovan is the Artistic Director of Hear Here Productions. Hear Here’s indoor and outdoor works combine music, theatre, dance, story-telling, visual art, poetry, sculpture and film in site specific locations. Creating work for abandoned mines, glacier lakes, bunkers, shipping containers, public parks and theatre spaces, Hear Here strives to create inclusive experiences that invite audiences of all ages to listen more deeply. Recent commissions include Cape Spear 24 (a large-scale interdisciplinary outdoor work for music and dance at North America’s most easterly point for Newfoundland’s Sound Symposium), This Tree Listens (an outdoor performance and workshops for Open Ears Festival in Kitchener) and many collaborative works with Susanne Chui (Halifax-based Mocean Dance), including Burnwater, a series of outdoor films called Woodlight (with poet Alice Burdick), and Resting Space for Halifax’s Mayworks Festival with her interdisciplinary trio Becoming Old Growth (with poet Basma Kavanagh). Erin created and performed music for While We Wait, a Gale Force Theatre production for young audiences and she also recently performed Amy Brandon’s solo snare drum work Sepals. As a percussionist she has performed with the Canadian Opera Company, the Calgary Philharmonic, Symphony Nova Scotia, Alkali Collective and her trio Saltwater Percussion (with Rob Power and Bill Brennan). Erin lives in Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia. Erin would like to thank her dear friend Rob Power for writing the solo Mahone Bay, that you will be the first people to hear performed live today!

Jack Chen, flute

Taiwanese-born Canadian flutist Jack Chen lives and performs in Halifax/Kjipuktuk. Jack’s love of chamber music has brought him to the stages of concert series all across the Maritimes, and he has premiered works by many Canadian composers. He appears frequently with Symphony Nova Scotia, Scotia Chamber Players, as well as Inner Space Concerts, a chamber concert series he founded in 2014.

Jack earned his degrees in flute and early music performance from Indiana University and the University of British Columbia. He has shared the stage with artists such as Jeanne Lamon, Bobby McFerrin, and Sir James Galway and has also appeared in numerous PBS television music specials and tours.

In addition to performing, Jack is the Artistic Director of Inner Space Concerts, is on faculty at the Acadia University School of Music, and is the General Manager of the Nova Scotia Youth Orchestra. While not playing the flute or teaching, Jack can be spotted enjoying the great outdoors of the east coast kayaking, biking, and skiing.

Jennifer King, piano

Energetic and insightful, Jennifer King is a versatile, award-winning pianist who is equally at home as a soloist or a collaborator on the concert stage. With a career spanning almost three decades, she has established herself as a sought-after performer and recording artist in the region. She performs with many respected soloists and multidisciplinary artists throughout the Maritimes. Jennifer has established herself as a sought-after performer and recording artist in the region, winning Classical Album of the Year in 2023 with the East Coast Music Association.

Jennifer's new album "Souvenance," which features romantically inclined music by groundbreaking composers, from Clara Wieck-Schumann to Joni Mitchell, will be released on April 25, 2025. Jennifer is the host and resident pianist of the Sensory-Accessible Concerts series.

Jack Chen, flûte

Le flûtiste canadien d'origine taïwanaise Jack Chen vit et se produit à Halifax/Kjipuktuk. Jennifer King, piano

Énergique et perspicace, Jennifer King est une pianiste polyvalente et primée, aussi à l'aise en tant que soliste qu'en tant que collaboratrice sur la scène de concert. Avec une carrière qui s'étend sur près de trois décennies, elle s'est imposée comme une interprète et une artiste exécutante recherchée dans la région. Elle se produit avec de nombreux solistes et artistes multidisciplinaires respectés dans les Maritimes. Jennifer s'est imposée comme une artiste de scène et d'enregistrement très recherchée dans la région. En 2023, elle a remporté le prix de l'album classique de l'année décerné par la East Coast Music Association.

Le nouvel album de Jennifer, « Souvenance », qui propose des musiques romantiques de compositeurs novateurs, de Clara Wieck-Schumann à Joni Mitchell, sortira le 25 avril 2025. Jennifer est l'animatrice et la pianiste attitrée de la série Sensory-Accessible Concerts.
