Join Tom Richards and his wonderful trio for an intimate, sensory-adapted concert celebrating the rich tapestry of jazz music through original compositions and timeless standards. Featuring trombonist Richards along with bassist Nicholas D’Amato and drummer Mark Adam, this performance is designed to be inclusive and accessible, offering a welcoming, judgment-free environment for all audience members to connect with live music. Richards’ original works, infused with eclectic influences ranging from classical and pop to avant-garde, sit alongside reimagined jazz classics, creating a seamless blend of innovation and tradition. Together, the trio explores the interplay of melody, rhythm, and improvisation, crafting a shared musical narrative that is both intimate and expansive. Part of our Sensory-Accessible Concerts series and hosted by pianist Jennifer King, this event is thoughtfully designed to accommodate diverse sensory needs and is presented in partnership with the Halifax Central Library.

Step into the immersive auditory world of Tom Richards' Monophilia, an interactive art installation that invites listeners to explore and shape their own musical experience. Comprising three records recorded in breathtaking mono, Monophilia celebrates a long-ignored format, offering a dialogue between the hearing-abled and those with unilateral hearing loss. Designed to be enjoyed individually or simultaneously, the three records tell a shared story from different perspectives. The fun and family-friendly installation, from the hands of master builder Torin Buzek, allows users to mix the music in real time, crafting their own journey through a forest of sonic possibilities. From haunting melodies to vibrant textures, each layer reveals a different perspective, encouraging deep engagement with the music.

Monophilia is inspired by Tom's brother Andrew, who has lived with unilateral deafness since birth. The songs aim to move the listener, and to foster empathy and curiosity about how we perceive the world around us. Free to the public and hosted on the fifth floor of the Halifax Central Library from March 2nd to April 18th, Monophilia is an invitation to discover, connect, and be transformed by the power of sound.
