About this Concert

Welcome the new year with another enchanting performance in our series of Sensory-Accessible Concerts, presented in partnership with the Halifax Central Library. This early January concert brings our host, curator, and pianist Jennifer King together with Symphony Nova Scotia hornist Mary Lee for a thoughtful program of winter-inspired works that includes Richard Bissell's "Song of a New World" and Ameican-Canadian composer Elizabeth Raum's "Romance." Jennifer and Mary will be joined by mezzo-soprano Paula Rockwell for vocal performances of Hector Berlioz's gripping "Le jeune Pâtre breton" from "Fleurs des landes", based on the work of poet Auguste Brizeux, Sting's wistful "You Only Cross My Mind in Winter" inspired by J.S. Bach, and Gustav Holst's perennial gem "In the Bleak Midwinter" based on the poem by Christina Rossetti. The mezzo-soprano will also narrate a selection of the ancient Aesop's Fables set to music for piano and horn by American composer Anthony Plog. Sensory-Accessible Concerts are designed to be welcoming, friendly, and accessible for autistic, neurodivergent, and intellectually disabled community members of all ages and their families. They are open to the public free of charge on select Sunday afternoons at the Halifax Central Library's Paul O'Regan Hall. Seating is limited, and registration is required.

Hornist Mary Lee started playing the horn at the age of 12 in Toronto, the city where she grew up and went to university. She followed her undergraduate studies with a year at the Utrecht Conservatory in the Netherlands, where she was able to focus on 2 of her favourite things: orchestra and chamber music! A winding road finally led Mary to Halifax, where she has long since resided, playing with Symphony Nova Scotia and teaching the horn-another one of her treasured pastimes. Energetic and insightful, Jennifer King is a versatile, award-winning pianist who is equally at home as a soloist or a collaborator on the concert stage.  With a career spanning almost three decades, she has established herself as a sought-after performer and recording artist in the region. She performs with many respected soloists and multidisciplinary artists throughout the Maritimes. Mezzo-soprano, Paula Rockwell, has been steeped in musical projects, performances, and music festivals in Canada and the United States and is on the faculty at Acadia’s School of Music. Rockwell recently released her CD "Unwrapped: Finally Surfacing", featuring original songs. She will be the music director for Stage Prophets’ production of Jesus Christ Superstar, June 2-4, 2023, at Acadia University’s Arena.

Accueillez la nouvelle année avec un autre spectacle enchanteur de notre série de concerts accessibles aux sens, présentés en partenariat avec la bibliothèque centrale d'Halifax. Le concert de janvier réunit notre hôte, conservatrice et pianiste Jennifer King et la corniste Mary Lee de l'Orchestre symphonique de la Nouvelle-Écosse pour un programme réfléchi d'œuvres inspirées de l'hiver, dont "Song of a New World" de Richard Bissell et "Romance" de la compositrice américano-canadienne Elizabeth Raum. Jennifer et Mary seront rejointes par la mezzo-soprano Paula Rockwell pour des interprétations vocales de la saisissante "Le jeune Pâtre breton" d'Hector Berlioz, tirée de "Fleurs des landes", d'après l'œuvre du poète Auguste Brizeux, de la mélancolique "You Only Cross My Mind in Winter" de Sting inspiré par J.S. Bach, et de l'éternel joyau de Gustav Holst "In the Bleak Midwinter", d'après le poème de Christina Rossetti. La mezzo-soprano racontera également une sélection des anciennes Fables d'Aesop mises en musique pour piano et cor par le compositeur américain Anthony Plog. Les concerts accessibles sur le plan sensoriel sont conçus pour être accueillants, conviviaux et accessibles aux membres de la communauté de tous âges atteints d'autisme, de neurodivergence et de déficience intellectuelle, ainsi qu'à leurs familles. Ils sont ouverts gratuitement au public certains dimanches après-midi à la salle Paul O'Regan de la bibliothèque centrale d'Halifax. Les places sont limitées et l'inscription est obligatoire.

La corniste Mary Lee a commencé à jouer du cor à l'âge de 12 ans à Toronto, la ville où elle a grandi et fait ses études universitaires. Elle a poursuivi ses études de premier cycle par une année au Conservatoire d'Utrecht, aux Pays-Bas, où elle a pu se consacrer à deux de ses activités préférées : l'orchestre et la musique de chambre ! Un chemin sinueux a finalement conduit Mary à Halifax, où elle réside depuis longtemps, jouant avec le Symphony Nova Scotia et enseignant le cor - un autre de ses passe-temps favoris. Énergique et perspicace, Jennifer King est une pianiste polyvalente et primée qui se sent aussi à l'aise en tant que soliste que collaboratrice sur la scène des concerts.  Avec une carrière qui s'étend sur près de trois décennies, elle s'est imposée comme une interprète et une artiste de disque recherchée dans la région. Elle se produit avec de nombreux solistes et artistes multidisciplinaires respectés dans les Maritimes. La mezzo-soprano Paula Rockwell a participé à de nombreux projets musicaux, spectacles et festivals de musique au Canada et aux États-Unis et fait partie du corps professoral de l'école de musique Acadia. Rockwell a récemment lancé son CD "Unwrapped : Finally Surfacing", qui comprend des chansons originales. Elle sera la directrice musicale de la production de Stage Prophets de Jesus Christ Superstar, du 2 au 4 juin 2023, à l'aréna de l'Université Acadia.
