Mark Lee, violin; Cindy Thong, piano

It thrills us to welcome Symphony Nova Scotia violinist Mark Lee and local prize-winning pianist Cindy Thong to the Lilian Piercey Concert Hall in Halifax for the second evening of our 32nd season. For this dynamic program, this distinctive duo will perform Ludwig van Beethoven's beautifully lyrical Sonata No. 5 in F major, Opus 24 Spring, the haunting Vocalise, Opus 34, No. 13 by Sergei Rachmaninoff, which was originally written for high voice and piano but here will be performed on violin and piano, and Claude Debussy's waltz La plus que lente, L. 121. The artists will perform the six movements of Béla Bartók's Romanian Folk Dances, Sz. 56, BB 68, which were originally played on shepherd's flute, and will finish this beautiful evening with the demanding Sonata No. 2 in A major, Op. 100 Thun or Meistersinger by composer Johannes Brahms. In addition to his work with our local symphony, violinist Mark Lee has also worked with the London Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and has performed widely as a chamber musician. Pianist Cindy Thong has performed extensively throughout Europe and, among other studies, is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in piano performance.

Nous sommes ravis d’accueillir le violoniste Mark Lee, de Symphony Nova Scotia, et la pianiste locale Cindy Thong, maintes fois primée, au Lilian Piercey Concert Hall de Halifax pour la deuxième soirée de notre 32e saison. Pour ce programme unique, le duo dynamique interprétera la magnifique Sonate n° 5 en fa majeur, « Le Printemps » opus 24, de Ludwig van Beethoven, l’envoûtante « Vocalise », opus 34, n° 13 de Sergueï Rachmaninov, qui a été écrite à l’origine pour voix aiguë et piano mais qui sera ici interprétée au violon et au piano, et la valse « La plus que lente », L. 121 de Claude Debussy. Les artistes interpréteront les six mouvements des Danses populaires roumaines de Béla Bartók, Sz. 56, BB 68, qui ont été interprétés, à l’origine, à la flûte de berger, et finiront la soirée avec l’exigeante Sonate n° 2 en la majeur, op. 100 « Thun » ou « Meistersinger », du compositeur Johannes Brahms. En plus de son travail avec notre orchestre symphonique local, le violoniste Mark Lee a également travaillé avec l’Orchestre symphonique de Londres et le Royal Philharmonic Orchestra et s’est produit en de nombreuses occasions en tant que musicien de chambre. La pianiste Cindy Thong s’est beaucoup produite dans toute l’Europe et, parmi d’autres études, elle prépare actuellement un doctorat en interprétation pianistique.
